Clear Scientific Awarded $5.2M NIDA Grant for Meth Reversal Phase 2 Clinical Trial

Cambridge, MA | August 2026 

Clear Scientific, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, was awarded a $5.2M award from the NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse to continue the development of CS-1103 through Phase 2 clinical trials for the reversal of methamphetamine intoxication. Illicit stimulant use, especially methamphetamine, is a major public health crisis for which there are no FDA-approved therapeutics.

Clear Scientific has raised an additional $2.6M in an open SAFE round, bringing total funding this year to $7.8M, which will be sufficient to complete the Phase 2 clinical trials focused on the reversal of methamphetamine intoxication.

“This new U01 for methamphetamine reversal is a significant milestone for the company. This funding will enable us to complete Phase 2, allowing us to prepare for the Pivotal Phase 3 Trial for meth reversal.” said Shekar Shetty, CEO. 

In September 2025, the FDA granted CS-1103 Fast Track designation for treatment of meth intoxication. The FDA grants investigational medicines Fast Track designation to facilitate the development and expedite the review of medicines that demonstrate the potential to treat serious conditions and fill an unmet medical need. 

About the Methamphetamine Crisis:

Acute methamphetamine intoxication remains a critical public health crisis in the United States, with an estimated 563,000 emergency department visits and over 29,000 deaths involving meth in 2024 alone. The condition is associated with severe neurological, cardiovascular, and multi-organ complications, including agitation, psychosis, hyperthermia, cardiac distress, and renal failure. Current treatments are limited to supportive care, which often involves medications that carry significant risks such as oversedation, respiratory depression, cardiac complications, and prolonged hospital stay. 

About CS-1103

CS-1103 is a first-in-class injectable small molecule sequestrant that binds and inactivates target compounds, rapidly reversing their effects and accelerating their clearance into urine. Clear Scientific is initially targeting methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine overdose, representing close to 95% of drug fatalities in the US. The Company’s pipeline includes indications in substance use disorder, central nervous system (CNS) and metabolic diseases amongst others.
