Kiawah Island, SC | June 2026

Peter Howe, CFO, and Shekar Shetty, CEO, from Clear Scientific attended the 2026 Coastal Emergency Medicine Conference (CEMC) June 4th-6th in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

For over a decade, this American College of Emergency Physician (ACEP) chapter has hosted Emergency Physicians from Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina as well as associated professionals to connect, share practice-changing education, and engage in forward-thinking collaboration.

Through conversations with physicians at CEMC, it was clear that methamphetamine intoxication is a significant problem across the southeast region of the U.S. Multiple clinicians reported seeing 3 or more methamphetamine-related admissions per day.  These situations often put patients, first responders, emergency clinicians, and staff at risk, while also disrupting care for others, further staining already limited EMS and ED resources.

Meth cases often require chemical or physical restraint followed by prolonged sedation and monitoring, with bed occupancy ranging from 12 to 72 hours.  Many of these patients are admitted to the psychiatric unit for further evaluation; it is often difficult to distinguish between substance-induced psychosis and an underlying mental health condition. Poly-substance intoxication is also extremely common, further complicating diagnosis and treatment.

With no approved standard of care to reverse methamphetamine or poly-substance intoxication, treatment often relies on sedation, e.g. benzodiazepines, ketamine or anti-psychotics highlighting the significant unmet medical need.
